Sydney Metro
Transport Infrastructure · Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Project Overview
The Sydney Metro is Australia’s largest public transport infrastructure program and one of the
most ambitious urban rail developments in the Southern Hemisphere. Designed to transform how
people move across Sydney, the program introduces a fully automated, high-frequency metro
rail system that significantly expands capacity, reduces travel times, and reshapes the city’s
long-term growth patterns.
The programme comprises multiple major lines delivered in stages, including Metro City &
Southwest, Metro West and the Western Sydney Airport Metro. CPB Contractors and joint
venture partners have delivered major tunnelling packages, station boxes and complex civil
works across densely developed urban environments.
Costs across the wider programme are measured in the tens of billions of dollars, with each
line representing a multi-billion-dollar investment. The works have required deep tunnelling,
extensive station construction, complex systems integration and sustained workforce capacity
over many years.
Key challenges include managing construction beneath dense urban areas, groundwater and
geotechnical conditions, and coordinating across multiple contractors and stakeholders. The
Sydney Metro programme has a major strategic significance in improving urban mobility and
supporting metropolitan growth.
