Project Overview

The Gorgon Gas Project, located on Barrow Island off the northwest coast of Western
Australia, is widely regarded as one of the largest and most complex natural gas developments
ever undertaken globally. Developed primarily by Chevron in partnership with ExxonMobil and
Shell, the project was designed to extract natural gas from offshore fields and process it into
liquefied natural gas (LNG) for export to international markets. Leighton Contractors played a key
role in the project’s construction phase, particularly through involvement in marine
infrastructure, including the construction of a major materials offloading facility (MOF) jetty.

The total investment for the wider Gorgon development is estimated in the tens of billions of
dollars, reflecting the challenging location, environmental compliance requirements, and the
advanced technology required for LNG processing and carbon management. Leighton’s marine
works contract and associated logistics were critical to enabling the delivery of prefabricated
modules and heavy equipment to Barrow Island under strict environmental constraints.

At peak construction, the project workforce numbered in the tens of thousands, with Leighton’s
marine and heavy-lift teams delivering piling, jetty construction and integration with logistics
systems. The works required specialised marine engineering, heavy lifting capabilities and
extensive planning to avoid ecological disturbance on the island.

The project presented notable challenges including remote-location logistics, strict
environmental regulation, cost escalations and complex stakeholder coordination. Despite these
challenges, the Gorgon project remains a landmark in Australia’s energy infrastructure history.
